Carbon Dioxide Technical Data

Carbon dioxide, also known as CO2, is the most versatile of all gases. Its physical and chemical properties, and its ability to be processed into a liquid, gas or solid, make it ideal for a variety of diverse applications. It is normally stored as a liquid and can exist only as a solid or gas at room conditions. Carbon dioxide has a low temperature (-109° F as a solid), is highly inert under most conditions, and although basically non-reactive, becomes chemically active when exposed to moisture or high heat. Carbon dioxide is a compound of carbon and oxygen in proportions by weight of about 27.3 percent carbon to 72.7 percent oxygen. At normal atmospheric temperatures and pressures, carbon dioxide is colorless, odorless and about 1.5 times as heavy as air. Carbon dioxide is sensed by some persons as having a slight pungent odor and biting taste. It is normally inert and nontoxic.  Tulsa Gas & Gear offers many sizes of carbon dioxide ranging from 20# cylinders to cryogenic bulk systems.   SEE BELOW ON HOW TULSA GAS AND GEAR CAN HELP IN YOUR APPLICATION AND USES.

  • WELDINGCarbon Dioxide (CO2) is the most common of the reactive gases used in MIG welding.  Pure CO2 provides very deep weld penetration, which is useful for welding thick material; however, it also produces a less stable arc and more spatter than when it is mixed with other gases. It is also limited to only the short circuit process.  CO2 IS COmmonly mixed with argon to improve productivity and penetration in GMAW.  For many companies, including those that place an emphasis on weld quality, appearance and reducing post-weld clean up, a mixture of between 75 – 95 percent Argon and 5 – 25 percent CO2 will provide a more desirable combination of arc stability, puddle control and reduced spatter than pure CO2.
  • bEVERAGE cARBONATION - This gas is used to make carbonated soft drinks and soda water.  cARBON DIOXIDE IS USED IN THE BREWING PROCESS AND IS CONSIDERED AN INGREDIENT AND CAN BE BLENDED WITH NITROGEN (n2) TO MAINTAIN THE BREWERS FLAVOR CHARACTERISTICS.   We can provide you with solutions to meet all your beverage carbonation needs.  We offer a range of compressed CO2 gas cylinders including 20 lbs and 50 lbs.  We also offer a bulk Beverage Carbon Dioxide (Co2) system as well.
    • BARS
    • Home Brewers
    • kegErator, beer coolers & dispensers
  • PH CONTROL SYSTEMS FOR WATER AND WASTEWATER INDUSTRY -  The Environmental Protection Agency enforces the Clean Water Act, which serves to regulate pollutant levels that enter the environment through stormwater, process water, and more.  REPLACING MINERAL ACID WITH CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2) IN ALKALINE WATER IS far less expensive than granular pH reducers such as such as sodium bisulfate or citric acid.
  • gREENOUSE pLANT gROWTH sUPPLEMENTATION - Plants require CO2 to execute photosynthesis, and greenhouses can promote plant growth with additional CO2. Greenhouse CARBON DIOXIDE ENRICHMENT WILL GROW PLANTS FASTER, AND PRODUCE BIGGER PLANTS.  Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most frequently used gas FOR Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) because its critical point can be reached at around 90 °F, cool enough for delicate plants
    • High levels of CO2 in a cannabis (mARIJUANA )garden can result in stronger plants with increased yields.  Increasing CO2 levels in your cannabis garden will allow your plants to create more energy
      • cOMPRESSED gAS co2 allows you to introduce controlled quantities of CO2 into your grow tents via emitters without having to own a CO2 generator.
  • fIRE SUPPRESSION- Carbon Dioxide fire extinguishers extinguish fire by taking away the oxygen element of the fire triangle and also be removing the heat with a very cold discharge.  UNLIKE SPRINKLER AND FOAM SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS, CO2 FIRE SUPPRESSION SYSTEMS REQUIRE LITTLE TO NO CLEAN-UP.  Carbon dioxide can be used on Class B & C fireS.
  • AEROSOL CAN PROPELLANT- CO2 has been a common propellant for many years. Historically
  • DRY CLEANING SOLVENT- Its solvation strength can be fine-tuned by adjusting the density of the fluid. CO2 leaves a lower amount of residue in products compared to conventional solvents, and it is available in relatively pure form and in large quantities.  Carbon dioxide could be an ideal solvent to replace PER; carbon dioxide is non-toxic, non-flammable, ecologically sound, cheap, non-corrosive, available on a large scale, and can therefore serve as a permanent sustainable alternative for the currently used solvents.
  • ENHANCED OIL RECOVERY (eOR)- Carbon dioxide is commonly injected into or next to producing oil wells to draw lost traces of crude oil.  CARBON DIOXIDE REDUCES THE OIL VISCOSITY.  CO2 has the property of mixing with oil to swell it, make it lighter, detach it from the rock surfaces, and cause the oil to flow more freely within the reservoir to producer wells
  • PAINTBALL- lIQUID CO2 gas is used in paintball markers, AND airguns AS A PROPELLANT
  • DRY ICE- It is used primarily as a cooling agent. Its advantages include lower temperature than that of water ice and not leaving any residue (other than incidental frost from moisture in the atmosphere). It is useful for preserving frozen foods where mechanical cooling is unavailable.
  • CO2 LASER- The CO2 laser, a common type of industrial gas laser uses CO2 as a medium
